Session 1 Activity - Write profile of yourself and your professional interests relevant to this module and program

A successful use of technology that enhances teaching or learning

Being a secondary school biology teacher, I hope that students can make good use of the summer holiday to revise for their AL examination. I send email
attached with tests to them and ask them to finish it and then send it back to me within a time limit. I find that all my students can follow well. In addition to words, they can also make drawings in their answers. After I have marked their answers, I send back to them with my feedback. Both I myself and my students find it a convenient way of teaching and learning. Graphs, diagrams and photographs on the screen can also be observed more clearly than that printed on paper. Both teacher and students can have good record of test performance for future reference.

My profile and my professional interest relevant to this module and program

I have been teaching in secondary school for many years. I teach biology and my students are of senior levels (S.4 to S.7). In addition to my first degree of B.Sc. in biology, I have also obtained two master degrees afterwards. One is M.Sc. in Environmental Management and the other is Master of Education. I am now a Doctor of Education student. I get all my degrees in the University of Hong Kong.

Being a teacher, I have to make good use of information technology to keep good record of teaching materials in the form of document files and graphic files. Recently I find it convenient to take photographs of organisms directly or through the microscope to make teaching materials. Such real life pictures can allow students to have strong impression and develop more interest in the subject. In addition I will ask them to collect information from the internet for their assignments. They are also required to report by means of effective power point presentation which include words, photographs and video clips. I hope that both myself and my students can make better use of information technology so that teaching and learning can be more convenient, accurate and effective. At the same time learning can be carried out in a more social environment such as a forum so that students can find more interest in the subject, and they can build up knowledge with their teacher and classmates more conveniently.

  1. I think that it is a good practice of what you have been doing to apply IT in your teaching. Actually, the students of senior secondary level have strong IT competence.

    You may further facilitate their learning of the subject perhaps by setting up discussion forum and putting teaching materials in the repository. I guess that most probably your working school is using a certain kind of online learning management system e.g. eClass. And the online learning management system usually has such features.

    I am using online learning management system in my teaching. I keep all teaching materials in the repository so that the students can refer to them anytime. Also, I require students to hand in their assignments through the system. And I will mark and give feedback in the same platform. The accessibility of using such system not only benefits teachers and students but also parents as they can view what and how their children are doing in the subjects.

  2. Email is indeed an important communication approach for teachers and students, and I know students are just blocked out by the school's intranets, which is only open to staffs for working and administration in China mainland.

  3. Neo, may be you can use a different system e.g. gmail, yahoo mail, etc. to communicate with your students then.
