Session 2 Activity 1- Review of an online instruction/activity

The review our group planned to make is ‘Waste Recycling’, which contains eight pages of different functions and stages. Personally, I think it is well designed as a whole and can be divided into two parts according to the classification of learning theories.

I. The first four pages can be regarded as one part, for they are all talking about the relevant introduction and information on the topic, the purpose of waste recycling, type of waste, processes and benefits of recycling and impact of waste. It is not difficult to find that the designer uses cognitivist learning theory. By providing information on each item and related knowledge, students are expected to use their mind as an information processor, having a clear concept of waste recycling, remembering what it is, how it works and what influence it may bring to our environment.

II. From the fifth page to the end one can be the second part, which mainly brings about learning activities and useful methods for further study on the topic by students themselves. I think the learning theory of constructivism is used into this part. The designer recommends fun activities and projects, and even designs the online game and quiz for students to evaluate their learning process. Besides, the useful links and extra online discussion class are also considered into the learning process. All of these activities and projects involve students’ personal discoveries and efforts, through which they may build their own knowledge systems rather than the ones put upon them by teachers or anyone else.

It is not difficult to find that the designer makes use of constructivist models of technology in a student-oriented way. Technology is treated as a tool in the learning activity, e.g., webquest, blogger, online games, online discussion forum and emails between students and instructors, which enable students to use freely during learning process.

The designer also use chart (recycling page), taking several tips, examples, even articles on how to reduce and recycle waste, and FAQ about this issue to help learners extend their mind on the topic, perfect their cognition process and enrich their cognition practice.

The deficiencies of this example are as follows:

a. Some of the outside links cannot be opened.

b. The structures of some pages are not very clear.

c. The purpose parts are a little duplicated, which may arouses unnecessary confusion in learning process.
